All said and done, $691 was raised to help Gayla with her recovery efforts. Word is that she's shuffling up to 30 feet with the aid of her walker - good news - but she's got a long road. We are glad to help in some small way.

The race, through hilly Madison County, started with a couple miles of neutrality, but once we crossed Jordan Creek Parkway, the fireworks began, as did the first of the endless hills. By Booneville things had broken up into a large group in front, followed by several small groups and individuals.

Things got interesting when the front group, or most of them, took the wrong turn off 105th, while Rick Blackford, having GPS'd the whole route, went the right way.

Realizing their mistake, most of the front group rode the course backwards, while some just turned it into a ride. Meeting up at mile 15, the race took on a new look as the two 'races' came together. As this was just a fun, impromptu race/ride - we all said 'whatever!' and let it unfold again.

Blackford stayed ahead, but somehow met up with a small group left over from the front pack. They rode on to the finish line together with Blackford taking the win.

The top three women, Lisa Vetterlein, Katie Fistler and Dee Mable, ended up in a group of eight that was content to complete the ride together. In the end, the hills broke the group up, leaving Mable and Vetterlein to duke out the hilly final mile, Mable pulling away over the top of the biggest hill, holding on for the win.

Thanks to everyone who came out to ride and help Gayla with her mounting medical bills. We'll look forward to doing it again at the State Gravel Road Championships on October 9 at Honey Creek Resort. www.tworiverstouringco.com for details.

1. The run course heads east and north around the mall, with a turn-around in front of Scheels. After a 2 mile run, racers will head out on their bike, heading south on Jordan Creek Parkway, to Booneville Road, heading west on what is also a good portion of the Hy-Vee triathlon bike course. After the 18 mile ride, racers then repeat the run to Scheels and back, with a final loop around the lake, completing 2.5 miles, to the finish line.

On-line registration is open until midnight Wednesday, May 12. In the time it took to grab the stakes and ribbons to mark the reroute, race leaders Joe Meiser and John Gorilla snuck through and onto the B road. Not realizing what had happened, the course was re-marked and Ted and Pals waited for the leaders. Soon, the first chase group came through and turned on to the new course.

Pals and Ted instantly realized that the leaders had snuck onto the B road - and were fighting the mud - un-able to drive in, due to the mud, it just had to stay as it was - there could be new leaders where the two courses came together.

Fortunately, Meiser and Gorilla had a sizable lead, and were able to stay in front on the other side of the detour, but the gap had closed. The second group, including Charlie Tri, Charlie Farrow, Charles Parsons and Corey 'Cornbread' Godfrey (maybe one or two others) continues to chase. Iowan's Dennis Grelk and Lance Andre, as well as Nebraska rider Matt Gersib are chasing in a third group.

Behind the third group, riders are stretched out single file for miles and are struggling against the wind.

According to Guitar Ted, the wind is slowing and the road surface is hardening, but it's still a long race.

d more. Steve Fuller, of Des Moines, was the last with 2 minutes to spare. Other Iowans to make it past include Ben Shockey, Dennis Grelk, Mike Johnson, Jeremy Fry and Joe Mann.

The lead group, who passed through the check point with a sizable lead, consisted of Joe Meiser, John Gurrila, and Charles Parsons. The tandem duo, who've finished the 2400 mile Great Divide race (and must have a rock solid marriage!) are Jay and Tracy Petervary and they made the cut off and are headed to checkpoint 2. Others filtering through include Matt Gersieb, Cornbread (Cory Godfrey), Troy Krause and Twin Six owner Ryan Carlson,

Checkpoint 2 is an 87 mile leg to What Cheer, and is due east from Monroe. Riders have until 4:00pm to make the checkpoint.
